10 Years Ago WNDU Channel 16 anchor Tricia Sloma presented Lincoln Elementary second-grade teacher Rita Golding with an “Excellence in Education” award recently. Golding was one of only three teachers, out of approximately 100 nominations, who received the award. Nancy Amundgaard, Teacher’s Credit Union, Warsaw branch manager, presented Golding with a $300 check in connection with the award. Lincoln Elementary also received $300. TCU co-sponsored the award. 25 Years Ago The following recipe was submitted in the 1986 Spotlight Recipe Contest for Dinner-In-Foil. 2 lb. lean chuck, cut into 1 inch cubes; 6 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced; 6 tbsp. chopped onion; 6 carrots cut into 1/4 inch slices; 1/2 cup chopped parsley (opt.); 2 cans golden Mushroom soup; salt and pepper; tabasco sauce. Divide vegetable ingredients into six equal parts. Place each on 18-inch square of foil. Cover each with 1/3 can soup, 1 tbsp. water and 2 dashes tabasco sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring up edges of foil and twist at top. Place bundles on grill about 2 inches above coals for at least two hours. May also bake in 350 degree oven for 2 hours. Jan Berry, Warsaw 50 Years Ago Manchester College will observe its annual May Day, Saturday, May 6, with junior co-ed Lauralee Brandenburg of North Manchester reigning as “Queen of the May -- 1961.” Rosemary Blickenstaff, a junior from Bombay, India, will be maid of honor, and two co-eds from each class will serve as attendants. The queen and maid of honor were recently selected by the college community from junior class co-eds. 75 Years Ago The Warsaw Daily Times was awarded first place for best looking front page makeup by the Republican Editorial Association in its annual contest. Competing with scores of other Indiana newspapers, including newspapers from the largest cities, The Times feels justly proud of the award. The city editor is Encel H. Dodge. The Michigan City News, Terre Haute Star and Bloomington Telephone were given honorable mention.
