Lakeland Art Association has been in existence since 1957 when Fred Olds, a Warsaw High School art teacher, invited a few artists to start painting with  him at the high school. Since the first year the one consistent feature of the association has been its annual Spring Show. The first shows were held at the Hayes Hotel (now Lake City Bank building) at the corner of East Center and High streets. Subsequent shows were held at various other locations including the Bowen Center and the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds until 1993, when the association found a year-round home at 109 N. Lake St. In 1999, they had to close its doors next to the Justice Building to make way for the county jail. It is now located in downtown Warsaw.

This recipe was from the Spotlight Recipe Contest for Broccoli Au Gratin:
1 bunch broccoli (about 2 pounds), or 1 small head cauliflower or 2 (10 oz.) frozen pkgs. of either vegetable; 1 can (11 oz.) condensed Cheddar cheese soup; 1/4 cup milk; 2 tbsp. buttered bread crumbs; 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled. Cook vegetable; drain. Place in shallow baking dish (10”x6”x2”). Stir soup; blend in milk; pour over vegetable. Top with crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until hot. Garnish with bacon before serving. Makes four to six servings. Mary Parr, Winona Lake.

There’s no doubt about it, spring has sprung, and with it, the first big mushroom report of the here-to-fore cold, damp season. Mrs. Ballard Hackworth, of Silver Lake, reports that Mike and Jenny Hackworth found 64 mushrooms earlier this week. Not so many, you say? Maybe not--but these were all under one tree.

The ambition of a life time was reached by Mrs. Lizzie Landis of near Sidney, when she and her six children attended the alumni banquet of the Sidney High School from which institution she graduated in 1900, and later   all of her six children with Doris the youngest graduating this year. Since the death of her husband, 17 years ago, Mrs. Landis assumed management of the 80-acre farm near Sidney and with hard work and sound management of the farm, she was able to finance her children through high school.
