10 Years AgoVelma Bright of the Akron Carnegie Public Library is celebrating a unique kind of anniversary this year. She is celebrating 50 years as the Akron library director. Why has she stayed so long?"Because," she said, "I am a local resident and because I'm interested in the community and in the children reading. And I've been here so long." In her 50 years as director, Bright said, she has seen, "a lot of changes."25 Years AgoWarsaw's Jeff Grose today holds the title of "1985 Mr. Basketball", the highest individual honor an Indiana high school basketball player can receive.The 6-foot, 2-inch 185-pound Warsaw Community High School senior was the overwhelming choice for the award in balloting of nearly 400 coaches, sports writer, radio and TV sports announcers throughout the state, conducted by The Indianapolis Star.This is the first time a Warsaw player has ever been voted "Mr. Basketball," although there have been two WCHS "Miss Basketball" recipients - Judi Warren in 1976 and Chanda Kline in 1978.50 Years AgoMiss Minerva Zimmerman, of Silver Lake, oldest resident of Kosciusko County, will be celebrating her 104th birthday Easter Sunday. She won't have a special party but members of the Zimmerman clan will be dropping in that day. Mrs. Zimmerman recently returned from Brazil, Ind., where she spent the winter with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Zimmerman. Her descendants number 72, include eight children, 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.75 Years AgoMrs. Lucy Whiteneck was hostess recently to members of her bridge club at her home in Warsaw. Two tables of bridge progressed, with prizes going to Mrs. Alice Vermillion, first, and Miss Helen Clark, second. Refreshments were served to Charlene Hartman, Ethel Bartol, Alice Vermillion, Sue Hamman, Margaret Bartol and Lucy Whiteneck.
