10 Years Ago"It's not enough to be good, be good for something!" That's the motto of Mamie L. Bass, Altrusa founder, as quoted in 1921. Warsaw Altrusa Club members are good for something. They founded the Beaman Home, and regularly volunteer there; began the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, and donate to several charities throughout the county. The 30 women also sponsor Project Independence through CCS and volunteer as Mobile Meals drivers. Each year the club awards three $500 scholarships to assist young adults in education.25 Years AgoA heroic effort by 50-year-old Ella Burnett, of Akron, on March 25 went practically unnoticed, according to Akron resident Howard M. Utter. The incident occurred when Mrs. Burnett's daughter's home across the street burst into flames. After Ella's daughter, husband and family fled the burning home, it was discovered her 11-month old grandson, Mark, was still in the house. She raced into the burning home to retrieve him, wrapping the child in a blanket and carrying him to safety. "She is a hero," said Utter. "She risked her life for her grandson. People need to know what happened."50 Years AgoMiss Judy Schutz, Miss Patricia Shoemaker, Miss Anita Eddingfield, Miss Sue Van Curen, Tom Kuhn, Dennis Horn, John DeGood, Charles Hollar and Jim Henderson are among the local students on vacation from Manchester College this week.
