10 Years Ago In an effort to right its girls tennis program, Warsaw has turned to Joe Beeson, who started Warsaw's boys tennis program in 1962 and coached until 1969. Then Beeson left to build the Warsaw Racquet Club. He returned to coach the Warsaw boys from 1982-1987. He followed that by coaching Warsaw's girls team from 1989-1992. It was then the Warsaw girls enjoyed their greatest run, going to semistate for four years in a row and advancing to the state final four in 1990 and 1991. Beeson hopes he can bring back the old magic. 25 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rule of Warsaw recently returned from a 13-day visit to the Hawaiian Islands, where they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Martha Rule is a cafeteria worker at Warsaw Middle School and Lewis Rule formerly operated Rule's Electric Motor Shop in Warsaw. 50 Years Ago Marilyn Simpson, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Vernon Simpson, was top point winner in the semi-finals of the state speech tournament at Elkhart County. She compiled 268 points in four rounds of discussion on federal aid to education. Linda Conley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Conley, placed first in humorous interpretation and Marianne Miller, daughter Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Miller, third in extemporaneous speaking. Marilyn, Linda and Marianne will represent Warsaw in the state finals in Indianapolis in May. 75 Years Ago Miss Virginia Guthrie was surprised recently at her home in Warsaw. The occasion honored her 18th birthday. Those present were: Martha Gast, Bernadine Rizer, Gene Calvert, Pat Shane, Delores Smith, Mary Ellen Burwell, Evelyn Ettinger, Carmelita Richmond. Many beautiful gifts were received by Miss Guthrie. Bridge was enjoyed and delicious refreshments were served.
