10 Years AgoFive local schools competed in the preliminary round of the boys swimming sectional at Wawasee Middle School. Two local swimmers took first-place finishes in the preliminary round.Manchester's Rod Smith took top honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.01 seconds. Smith also finished second in the 200 freestyle. Warsaw's Adam Helfrich swam to a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with his time of 56.34 seconds. Helfrich was third in the 200 freestyle.25 Years AgoBill Engelberth, a Pierceton area farmer, was honored with the "Outstanding Conservation Farmer" Award at the annual dinner meeting of the Kosciusko Soil and Water Conservation District this month.Engelberth received the award based on his stewardship of the soil in the practices of cover crops, crop rotation system using hay the third year, no-till farming, and grass waterways. Don Zolman presented the award on behalf of the Kosciusko SWCD.50 Years AgoMrs. J.N. Rodeheaver, Kings Highway, entertained over the weekend Mrs. C.C. Long and Mrs. E. LeRoy Stiffler, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Miss Lydia Vargas, of Santiago, Chile. The first two are on the staff of "The Methodist Woman" magazine. Miss Vargas manages a Methodist bookstore in Chile.75 Years AgoThe extension of Arthur Street from Cook Street to the cemetery drive, extending along the shores of Pike Lake, will be open to traffic by the end of the month, Street Commissioner Frank R. Lucas reported.When completed, it is claimed this will be one of the most favored of improvements as it will prevent traffic to the lake beach from driving along at the edge and entrance to Oakwood Cemetery. In the past bathers going to the beach have interfered with funerals.
