10 Years AgoThe State Senate recognized Wayne Tombaugh as an outstanding community leader of Mentone when State Senator Kent Adams visited the 90-year-old in his home. Adams presented Tombaugh with a resolution marking his 64 years as a precinct committee person, former leader of the Mentone Town Council and his many years as an official of the Indiana High School Athletic Association.25 Years AgoA train derailment Sunday morning blocked much of the traffic in the central and southern sections of Warsaw for several hours. According to police, two boxcars located just behind the Conrail engine were derailed about 6:30 a.m. Sunday when one of the dolly wheels broke. No injuries were reported, but the accident blocked many east-west traffic routes in the city for almost three hours.50 Years AgoMarjorie Cook, a senior from Claypool, is on the Taylor University debate team that registered a grand sweep - winning six out of six debates - in a recent tourney against four other Hoosier colleges. Debating the issue "Resolved; That the United States should adopt a program of compulsory health insurance for all its citizens," the Taylor negative and affirmative teams each won three debates in competition with Goshen, Franklin, Hanover and Anderson Colleges. Marjorie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cook, Claypool.75 Years AgoMr. and Mrs. Will Rube Ferna, well-known Warsaw theatrical folks known as Ferns & Avis, have returned home after a long tour with Halton Powell's barnyard frolics review, playing in the eastern and southern states. They were featured in comedy and dancing acts. Many of the novel costumes for the review were designed by Avis.
