10 Years AgoJennifer Whitaker and Matthew Christy will go word to word at the Kosciusko County Spelling Bee finals. Whitaker, of Edgewood Middle school, was the winner of the middle school bee, and Christy, HELPS Homeschoolers, won the elementary contest. Whitaker spelled "domino" correctly, then successfully spelled "gorilla" to take the middle school title.The winning word for the elementary bee was "sedentary," which Christy spelled correctly. Christy then spelled "fisticuffs" to win the bee.25 Years AgoTwo Warsaw Community High School athletes were named to all-state cross country teams for 1985 by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. Senior Sean Rhodes was a boys second team selection, while freshman Beth Irvine was an honorable mention selection for the girls team.50 Years AgoRalph O. Nusbaum, editor emeritus of The Times-Union, and his wife, Ruby, are observing their golden wedding anniversary quietly at home today. Their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Nusbaum, and the four Nusbaum granddaughters, Sue, Donna, Randa and Peggy, are here from Glen Ellyn, Ill. Because the veteran newspaperman is convalescing from illness, the Nusbaums planned no special celebration. Their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jack (Frances) Peacock, called them from Atlanta, Ga., and many friends have sent congratulatory messages.75 Years AgoSome sort of a record was established here recently when the local milk drinking speed contest staged at Bob Breading's cigar store and soda fountain was won by Shorty Piper of Winona Lake. At the go-signal Amishman Perry Yoder, of Hasting, Joe Watkins of Warsaw, and Otho "Shorty" Piper, Winona Lake, each raised a quart bottle of milk. Shorty finished in 15 seconds flat. Joe Watkins consumed his in 20 seconds. Yoder failed to finish so "Shorty" helped him out.
