10 Years AgoDr. Gene E. Likens recently added another honor to his long list of accomplishments. The 1953 Sidney High School graduate and director of the Institute for Ecosystem Studies had a laboratory facility named after him during a Nov. 3 dedication. IES is in Millbrook, N.Y. and was founded by Likens in 1983 at the Mary Flagler Cary Arboretum. IES is one of the world's leading ecological research centers and Likens is one of the most respected ecologists in the world. Likens is the son of Josephine Likens, rural Pierceton, who attended the dedication in a surprise visit, and the late Col. Likens.25 Years AgoMentone resident Robert Clupper, owner of the Mentone Airport and pilot of a United Airlines Boeing 747, and his crew are winners of United's 1985 flight Crew Member of the Year award given by the company's Flight Operations Division. Clupper and crew will be honored at the Westin Hotel of Chicago's O'Hare Airport on Jan. 15.50 Years AgoThe conversion to the new automatic electric dial switching equipment at Silver Lake took place today as scheduled, according to T.E. Lemmon of the General Telephone Company. The new seven-digit numbers appearing in the 1960 directory must now be dialed when calling the 420 customers in that area. The first three digits of each number are the same and are followed by four more digits.75 Years AgoRecords of Clerk-Treasurer William Chinworth show that the past year Mayor C.C. DuBois and the Republican city administration completed the year 1935 without having to borrow any money, and on Jan. 1, 1936, there was a balance of $13,979.03, which was $6,252.52 greater than the city balance at the end of 1934.
