10 Years Ago The Honorable Rex L. Reed, judge of Kosciusko Circuit Court, swore in Kosciusko County Councilman-at-large Bob Sanders. Kennedy, Brittany and Kimberly Osborn were able to watch as their grandpa took the oath of office. John Hall, Hall & Marose Agency, was surprised at a recent Rotary Club meeting when Jean Northenor presented him with the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor the governor of Indiana bestows. Hall was given the tribute for his distinguished service to the state. The Kosciusko County Historical Society announces a new format for their newsletter, “The Thaddeus” – newly expanded, with in-depth, informative historical articles. 25 Years Ago William E. Goshert, 62, was appointed to the Warsaw Community School Board for 1990. He was assistant superintendent in charge of finance at Warsaw from 1969-78, served in the Jay School Corp. in Portland for 10 years, and was a teacher for 13 years. Deputy marshal Terry Howie replaces Larry Holderman as Winona Lake town marshal. Holderman resigned to take a position as patrol officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. Brian Hupp takes Howie’s place beginning Jan. 1, 1990. Street superintendent is Kim Endicott. Milford Town Council accepted the resignation of deputy marshal Aaron Rovenstine effective Jan. 1. He has accepted a deputy sheriff’s position with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. 50 Years Ago This week marks the 50th anniversary of the one-story Washington Grade School (then West Wayne), located at the south edge of Warsaw on Ind. 15. Dedication services were held Dec. 10, 1914. Arden Kincaide, Pierceton hardware store owner, who was a pupil at the school when it opened and whose wife now teaches at Washington, brought a newspaper clipping and program of the service. Joe Ettinger, Warsaw’s Man of the Year in 1962, taught fifth and sixth grades and agriculture when the school was first opened; Maude Zimmerman Penfield taught first and second grades and home economics. Another of the first teachers was Ethel Holbrook, who passed away Dec. 7. Foster Jones was the first principal until 1917; during World War II, he became principal of Madison School (West Ward). 75 Years Ago Your Daily Times has installed a special studio, photography room in Room 6, upstairs, where prospective brides are posing for their wedding photographs. Special flood lights and backgrounds enable the photographer to get the proper flattering soft picture a bride deserves. Local Elks’ Lodge new magazine, “Elkade,” published at your Daily Times job printing office, is now going to press with the latest news of interest to Elks. Game Warden Lester Ball looked up the law and reported that a motorboat can be operated on any size lake, but not at a speed to exceed 10 miles per hour on a lake under 320 acres. During spawning season, April 1 to June 15, no motorboats may be operated on these lakes. Center Lake contains around 125 acres – motorboats may be operated, but not too fast.
