Religious Liberty
Editor, Times-Union:
The following is more of the positions that one’s government can have on the issue of religious liberty. The first letter briefly described the No Official Policy and Separation of Church and State positions. This letter will briefly describe positions three and four; government favoritism toward a specific religion and government allowed dominace by a specific religion.
Positions On Religious Liberty Continued
3. Favoritism toward a specific religion- State gives special acknowledgment or preferential treatment toward majority religion or religion of powerful minority. Religious liberty for the most part for most or all faiths. Uneasy tolerance toward members of minority faiths and denominations and those persons considered to be heretics and infidels.
4. Dominance by a specific religion- Religion of the majority or powerful minority is officially recognized by state as the preferred public faith within its jurisdiction and given exclusive rights, privileges, and tax payer funded benefits. Complete religious liberty only for members of majority faith or faith of powerful minority. Members of minority religions and denominations along with persons considered to be heretics and infidels are restricted and harassed in the open or closed practice of their faiths.
The remainder of the positions on religious liberty that one’s government can have will follow at a later date.
