Relay For Life Starts Saturday

Posted

The annual Relay for Life fundraiser will take place this weekend at Central Park, where participants will be walking for 24 consecutive hours hoping to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The event is open to the public, and all interested are encouraged to participate. Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, teams will be organized to walk in shifts around Central Park until 9 a.m Sunday. The money raised goes to cancer education, medical research and transportation of cancer patients to and from treatments, as well as much more.

"Unfortunately, not many people are interested in the cause unless cancer has hit their family," event coordinator Jan Barger said. "I encourage all who can make it to come out to the park. Once they see our cause, I guarantee they will be dedicated for life."

This is the seventh year of the Relay for Life event and the third year the event has been held at Central Park. Activities scheduled for the weekend include an opening ceremony, a luminary ceremony, a survival brunch and a cutie contest.

Donations to the American Cancer Society can be made and the organization asks for a minimum of $10. A Relay for Life t-shirt will be given to all donors.

Luminaries also can be purchased to memorialize lost friends or loved ones or to honor cancer survivors. The luminaries will be placed along Central Park and will be lit until dusk on Sunday.
