Relay For Life Gears Up For '04 Event

American Cancer Society is looking for teams and corporate sponsors for its annual Relay For Life.

"Anyone can be a team," said Kristin Everett, American Cancer Society community development director for Kosciusko and LaPorte counties. "That's the uniqueness of Relay - anyone can participate."

Relay for Life is the No. 1 signature event for the American Cancer Society, she said. This year's theme is "Caribbean Cure (It's Good For The Soul)."

Relay For Life in Kosciusko County 2004 is May 21-22 from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. at Central Park, Warsaw.

For 2004, Everett said, they hope to have 50 teams. Teams can consist of eight to 10 people with a registration fee of $10 per person. Cost includes a free shirt.

Each team raises money through various fund-raisers. The overall goal this year is to raise $50,000, compared to last year's $35,000. Prizes will be awarded to the top fund-raising team and other categories, like best decorated campsite.

Everett said, "If you've never done it before, come out."

Again this year, there will be a "tent city" for people to camp out during the Relay and there will be different events throughout the night. Bands will play and radio station 103.5 will be onsite for the entire 15 hours.

Luminaries for the luminary ceremony can be purchased from Rita Rider at Dekko. Contact Rider by calling 260-439-3245 or e-mail ritarider@dekko.com

Meetings for team captains are the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at Warsaw Community Public Library.

Relay For Life offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams made up of family, friends and co-workers join other community teams in raising money and awareness. During the 15-hour event, team members will take turns walking around the track while others are free to socialize and participate in other activities.

Relay For Life supports those who have lost loved ones, offers encouragement to those who are currently battling the disease and celebrates life with those who have survived. The money raised goes toward research, education, advocacy and service.

Cancer survivors are invited to join the Relay For Life May 21 at 6 p.m. at Central Park to receive a new survivor shirt and take the victory lap. For more information, call Rick and Kelsa Enyart at 268-9535 or the local American Cancer Society toll-free at 866-522-2111. Kosciusko Community Hospital is hosting a dinner for cancer survivors.

There are different levels for corporate sponsorship for the Relay. For $10,000, a corporation can be a platinum sponsor; $5,000 for gold; $3,000, silver; $1,000, bronze; $500, Cancer Fact; $250, track; and $100, friend. Deadline for corporate sponsorship is May 1 to be in advertising and brochures. For more information, call 866-522-2111.
