Members of the 2009 Kosciusko County Relay for Life committee took to the streets Thursday in a scavenger hunt aimed at setting the tone for their upcoming campaign.
Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The local committee will work to raise community involvement in the event."We're really trying to get more groups, businesses and schools involved," said Kosciusko County Relay for Life Co-Chair Mackenzie Cloutier. "We're just trying to get out in the community and get people aware and excited about the relay."
Cloutier said raising relay involvement isn't the committee's only goal this year.
"What we found here in Kosciusko County is that ACS services have not been well promoted recently," she said.
Committee members will be trying to spread the word about the services ACS offers for those battling cancer and their families.
Thursday's scavenger hunt gave committee members a chance to come together to bond as a team and practice working together to raise awareness. Scavenger hunt lists included challenges including taking a photo of team members hanging Relay for Life posters in Warsaw and Winona Lake, taking a photo with a fireman, recruiting new committee members and bringing back a coin from 1913, the year the ACS was founded.
"We're creating relay energy and enthusiasm, educating the community and having fun," said Cloutier.
Relay for Life is scheduled for June 5 and 6, 2009. The official kickoff event will be Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon at Baker Youth Center, Warsaw.
