Redeemer Lutheran, Tri Kappa To Hold County Breast Cancer Awareness Day

WINONA LAKE - Redeemer Lutheran Church and Tri Kappa are joining efforts to hold a Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Kosciusko County.
The day will be April 18 at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College, Winona Lake.
This year is the second year for the breast cancer awareness day. The first event was two years ago in October 2007 when more than $10,000 was raised for breast cancer research and was attended by more than 200 people.The day begins with Tri Kappa's "Baskets and Bags Bingo."
Doors open at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at 8:30 a.m. with raffles and a light breakfast. Tri Kappa bingo games begin at 9:30 a.m. until noon with prizes including Longaberger and Vera Bradley items. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.trikappabingo.com, from any Tri Kappa member, or by calling 574-453-0995.
This year's bingo benefits Tri Kappa philanthropies and the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, according to Dana Leon Huffer, Tri Kappa bingo committee co-chair and women's health committee chair.
Redeemer Lutheran Church's "Pretty in Pink" party will have an auction preview from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the Orthopaedic Capital Center. Guest speaker Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, co-founder of Vera Bradley Designs, will speak at 2 p.m., and the auction will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Tickets for Redeemer Lutheran Church's "Pretty in Pink" party can be purchased for $8 in advance and $10 at the door at the Orthopaedic Capital Center or by calling 574-269-5503 or the Redeemer Lutheran church office at 574-267-5656. A raffle will be part of the event with tickets $2 each and with a reduced price for larger amounts purchased. Raffle tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 574-269-5503 or 574-267-5656.
Special music will be provided by Michael McDermott, Chicago, and Barb Richards from Magic 95 will serve as the emcee.
There are more than 125 auction items donated by area businesses and individuals. Items include: a YMCA membership, estate planning services by attorney Paul Refior, a week at Grace Lancer basketball camp, a birthday package at Somethin' Funn, a Garmin GPS unit, an iPod, digital camera, golf bag, restaurant and movie tickets, a gas card, bicycle, jewelry from Crownovers, a Terry Armstrong art print, Estee Lauder items, golfing at Stonehenge and Rozella golf courses, a handmade quilt and gift baskets.
A ticket package, which includes a bingo and "Pretty in Pink" ticket is $30.
The "Pretty in Pink" party will benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, Tri Kappa Philanthropies, and the family of Rachel Doyle, a Riley Hospital for Children cancer patient.
Doyle, 2, Warsaw, attends Redeemer Lutheran Church and was diagnosed with leukemia.
After a six-day hospital stay at Riley, she has began 26 months of chemotherapy and has been on a variety of medicines since then.
A ribbon-hanging ceremony open to the public is April 17 at the Kosciusko County Courthouse at 12:15 p.m. to celebrate "Pinked Out" day in efforts to paint the town pink.
Warsaw City Council President Joe Thallemer will serve as the city's representative during the ceremony.
The town of Winona Lake will have pink ribbons displayed on light posts. Ribbons also will be displayed around the Kosciusko County Courthouse.
Each ribbon represents an individual touched by breast cancer, those who are fighting breast cancer, those who have lost their lives to breast cancer, and family and friends who honor them, or someone who wants to join the fight against breast cancer.
The ribbons will display a name of a person whose life has been touched by breast cancer.
The ribbons are $5 and will be available until April 10. They can be purchased at the following locations: The Shuttle Shop, Just for Kids, Hardesty Printing, Kosciusko Community Hospital gift shop, Cancer Care Center, Sacred Heart School, Rockhill Pinnick LLP, Cosmo & Company, Betty's Cake Shop, Brouwer's Carpet & Furniture, Expressions Salon & Day Spa, Reed & Earhart Attorneys, Signature Studio, 1000 Park Bakery, Tree of Life Bookstore and CVS.
The ribbons will be placed at the locations April 17 and will be posted for a week.
"The goal is to turn the county pink," said Heidi Floyd, Redeemer Lutheran church member.
Floyd's husband Stuart is the pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Heidi is a breast cancer survivor. She serves as a development ambassador for the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.
Floyd said cancer affects everyone. Men, women, teenagers, and children are invited to the breast cancer awareness day events.
Several employers in the area have joined the campaign by participating in "Pinked Out" day April 17. Warsaw Community School Corp., KCH, ML Motorsports and others will support breast cancer awareness by having all employees wear pink for the day.
