Redeemer Lutheran Opens New Elementary School

Redeemer Lutheran Church opened a new elementary school on Old U.S. 30, Warsaw.

Principal Orvin Schlegel said ground-breaking for Redeemer Lutheran School took place Aug. 1, 1999, and Ideal Construction, Warsaw, began work on the school in November.

The new school serves children in kindergarten through sixth grade and offers 3- and 4-year-old preschool classes. Redeemer School is a fully accredited school with a Christ-centered curriculum.

Schlegel said the school "is available to our community" and anyone can register "as long as they're going to be taking our religion."

He said construction will be complete "anytime between now and Aug. 21."

"We have a few odds and ends to finish," Schlegel said. A few doors need to be finished and a tree still needs to be planted. Schlegel also said the gym will not be completed by the time classes begin Aug. 22. It will be completed "whenever (Ideal Construction) gets around to finishing it." Schlegel said it shouldn't be too long.

"It's usable," Schlegel said of the school. "It just won't have all the finishing touches on it."

Schlegel said Redeemer Lutheran School is not accepting staff applications because "we already have a full staff."

To pay for the new school, he said, "the congregation did a three-year pledge and the remainder (of the funds were) borrowed from Lutheran Church Extension Fund, an agency that helps build churches and schools."

Schlegel said he is very excited to see the new school opening. "I worked 14 years to get it to happen," he said. He also said the new school underwent three different designs before it was finalized.

"It's the Lord's doing," Schlegel said of the new school.

The school is at 1692 W. Lake St. and is still accepting applications for the 2000-2001 school year.

As of Wednesday night, Schlegel said, approximately 65 students have been enrolled. The school will hold 175 students. Those interested in registering their children in the school should call 267-2056.

Dedication and open house are set for Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. Classes begin Aug. 22.
