Red-Light Bill Approved By State Senate

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Senate Thursday passed legislation allowing individual communities the option of adding sensory cameras at dangerous intersections.

Filed by State Senator Kent Adams (R-Warsaw), the bill was co-written by senators Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne), Charles Meeks (R-Leo), Rose Antich (D-Merrillville) and John Broden (D-South Bend).

The bill heads to the house for further action.

When a vehicle commits the violation of running a red light, the automated camera produces a still image of the motor vehicle proceeding through the intersection. Citations are mailed to the owners of the violating vehicles, complete with the photos. Enforcement personnel would treat the offense as a nonmoving violation that would have no effect on driver's license points or insurance.

A civil penalty may not exceed $100, and local communities must post signs near intersections indicating the presence of the camera. Vendors for the red-light cameras may not be paid based on a per-ticket violation.

In the House the bill is being introduced by Rep. Gary Cook (D-Plymouth) and sponsored by David Wolkins (R-Winona Lake), Sue Scholer (R-West Lafayette) and Win Moses (D-Fort Wayne).
