Recycling programs are becoming success stories for the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District.
Marsha Eikenberry, SWMD director, told the district board Tuesday the Household Hazardous Waste Day held May 15 was a success.
"It just went like clockwork. No one had to wait or anything," she said.
Approximately 615 cars drove through in the five-hour period. Last year, there were approximately 400 vehicles. That's almost a 26 percent increase in participation over last year, she said.
"I think people are really getting the hint of turning this stuff in," Eikenberry said.
Household Hazardous Waste Day isn't the district's only recent success.
According to Eikenberry, the Winona Lake curbside program is going well, with minor problems still being addressed.
"All in all, I think people are pleased," she said.
During the first three weeks of the program, Eikenberry said, 12.39 tons of materials were recycled at the curb. On average, eight to 10 tons of recyclables are collected per month from each recycling unit in the county. Anticipating collecting at least another four tons at the curb the last week of May, Eikenberry said, the recycling rate in Winona Lake will increase by 45 percent during the first month.
In other news, Eikenberry said, three area cleanups have taken place over the past week.
Dewart Lake property owners cleaned up around the lake and their properties.
Friday, Eikenberry said, letters were placed at all houses around Sellers Lake asking them to clean up around their property and the lake. A 30-yard container was provided by SWMD.
Residents filled the container more than four times.
"They're the type of people who wouldn't pay to throw anything away," said SWMD Board President Avis Gunter. She said she was glad they did some cleaning in the area.
Tippecanoe Lake property owners also did some cleanup over the weekend, Eikenberry said. An eight-yard container was provided to them for cleaning the lake. Several tires were found in the lake.
