Recycling Day Set At Winona

Posted
WINONA LAKE - KC Recycling Depot and Winona Lake are teaming up to encourage Winona Lake residents to recycle.

Winona Lake residents can take various chemicals Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon to the Winona Lake Street Department at the end of Chestnut Avenue in Winona Lake.

The department will accept household chemicals, poisons, fertilizers, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, oil-based paints, stains, sealers and solvents, non-alkaline batteries and fluorescent and cfl bulbs.Terry Howie, Winona Lake town council member and Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District member, and Sue Studebacker, director of the KCSWMD, are challenging Winona Lake residents to increase their recycling efforts.

Residents who have tires or electronics can take the items to KC Recycling Depot, 220 S. Union St., Warsaw. The Depot will be open until 1 p.m. Saturday.

The district collects electronics, anything with a circuit board, for 15 cents per pound.

KC Depot also collects rinsed plastic bottles, steel and aluminum cans, glass jars, newspapers, magazines and cardboard.

Useable latex paint in a non-rusted can is accepted for use in the free reuse room. Unusable latex has a disposal cost of $3 per gallon.

The depot is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Depot offers many services beyond the curbside recycling. On the second Saturday of each month, the Depot offers tire recycling March through October.

The fee is $2.50 per car tire or $15 per semi or tractor tire.

Winona Lake residents who do not have recycling bins can purchase a small green container from the town offices for $5.50 or a larger blue container on wheels for $11. People should call 574-267-7581 or stop by the town office at 1310 Park Ave. to purchase a container.

Residents also can purchase an 18-gallon container at a store and clearly label it with a marker as "recycle" so that it is not mistaken for trash by the garbage company.
