Record Snowfall Blankets Area

Posted

Snow fell at a rate of an inch per hour most of Thursday afternoon and into the evening with measurements of 6 to 9.4 inches taken in the county.

"There's no substitute for a ruler," said meteorologist Mike Boguth about official snow levels. Boguth is stationed at the National Weather Service station in North Webster where more than 9 inches of snow was reported and recorded the old-fashioned way.

It's a record-breaking amount of snowfall for Dec. 8.

Boguth said the Fort Wayne Airport reported 8.4 inches of snow this morning with 8.3 inches recorded before midnight.

The old snowfall record was set in 1914 at 6.4 inches.

"We don't expect anymore today, maybe some flurries," the meteorologist said. "It's a pretty active pattern and some additional snow will fall, nothing extremely significant.

"But you know how weather is, that could all change."

The storm forced cancellations of meetings and social activities.

There were 37 accidents reported between Thursday afternoon and this morning, according to Tom Brindle of central dispatch, including 27 "slide offs" because of slick conditions.

School classes were delayed or closed today.

So far this month, there have been no days warmer than 32 degrees.

Last year, the northern Indiana region enjoyed highs of 50 degrees fahrenheit on this date; today's temperature is expected to be around 25 degrees. On this same date in 2004, the high was 42 degrees and in 2002 the high temperature was 32 degrees.

Today's weather is expected to clear off, with a high around 25 degrees; a west wind between 10 and 15 miles per hour. Tonight should be mostly clear, with a low around 11 degrees; southwest winds around 15 mph.

Saturday: A chance of flurries after 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high around 29 degrees; southwest wind around 15 mph. Saturday night: A 40-percent chance of snow showers, mostly cloudy, with a low near 22 degrees; a west wind around 15 mph.

Sunday: A 40-percent chance of snow showers, mostly cloudy, with a high near 27 degrees; a northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph. Sunday night: A 40-percent chance of snow showers, mostly cloudy, with a low around 16 degrees.
