SYRACUSE - Raymond Eugene "Gene" Leedy, 71, of Syracuse, died at 7:15 p.m. July 21, 2009, in his residence.
He was born Jan. 13, 1938, in Etna,to Kenneth R. and Lona M. Gaff Leedy. On April 30, 1981, in Syracuse, he married Sherry L. Hershberger Hoover, who survives.
He graduated from Larwill High School in 1956, and attended Wabash College, Crawfordsville. He was a Whitley, Noble and Kosciusko county area resident and moved to Syracuse in 1975. He formerly worked as an accountant at Sam Patton Accounting, Ligonier, for many years. He was co-owner and operator of Leedy's Variety Store, Cromwell, Ligonier and Wolcottville in the 1960s and 70s. He also owned Merchandise Access & R.E. Leedy Tax Services, both in Syracuse. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse; a former charter member of Wawasee Kiwanis Club, Syracuse; and a former Boy Scout Leader in Cromwell. He served in the U.S. National Guard.
Also surviving are two daughters, Debra Hasse, Syracuse, and Lisa Leedy, Bloomington; four sons: Tom (and spouse Kerri Axel) Leedy, Kendallville; Greg Leedy, Cromwell; Kevin (and spouse Terri) Leedy, Hudson; and Steve (and spouse Michelli) Leedy, Elko, Nev.; a stepson, James Hoover, Syracuse; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Marlene (and spouse Daryly) Hill, Albion; and a brother, Tony Leedy, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was preceded in death by a sister.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary united Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. David Herr officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Pierceton Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse.
