This letter is to address the article on the front page of the Times-Union on Dec. 3 regarding the rape trial of Shawn Hattery that is currently in progress in our county.
First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the victim of this awful crime. The reason I am writing this letter is because I feel it is absolutely unnecessary for all the sordid details to be printed in the paper. Not only did this poor woman have to live through the ordeal and recount it very specifically in court, now her words and all that she had to go through are being displayed for anyone to read who picks up this paper.
I believe that the trial should be covered by the newspaper, however, I see no need whatsoever for all the horrid details to be included. The Times-Union would have done well to follow the Shakespeare's idiom and realize that discretion is the better part of valor.
