Rallies Planned To Support Troops

Posted

While most Americans will watch the war from the comfort of their own homes, nearly a quarter of a million American troops will be fighting the war against Iraq in the Middle East.

Rallies for those men and women serving overseas will be held Saturday.

In Syracuse, at Lakeside Park at 1 p.m., a rally will be held. It will include guest speakers, prayer, photo displays of local and area men serving overseas and yellow ribbons for participants. Food will be provided by South Whitley AMVETS, Syracuse Veterans of Foreign Wars and local businesses.

A registry book also will be available for people to sign, which will be sent to the local troops serving overseas.

Like the Syracuse rally, an event planned in Auburn also will not be political or pro- or anti-war protests. That rally will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kruse Auction Park, Exit 126 on Highway I-69, Auburn.

Glenn Beck from the nationally syndicated "Glenn Beck Show" and founder of the Rally for America movement will speak along with Pat Miller of WOWO. Veterans, firefighters, policemen, the Columbia space shuttle crew and victims of 9/11 will be honored. There also will be live patriotic music, including music from Sandi Patti, video shows and opportunities for people to show their support for the troops.

Parking is free and assistance will be available on-site for the handicapped and elderly.

Whitley County residents are encouraged to meet in the parking lots at Churubusco, Columbia City and Whitko high schools at 7:30 a.m. to follow a caravan to Auburn for the rally. Everyone is being encouraged to bring flags and posters and wear red, white and blue to show their support.
