Rain Shuts Roads, Prompts Warnings

Rain Shuts Roads, Prompts WarningsIncessant recent rains have worked to saturate the area, and as a result, have left many roadways under water.
Now, local officials are warning drivers to proceed with caution when encountering high waters.
Sgt, Chad Hill, public information officer for the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, said high waters can hold unknown dangers to motorists, and drivers should avoid driving through at all costs.
“A lot of times the water is deeper than people assume it is, so there’s a potential that it can actually lift a vehicle and carry it off,” Hill said. “Sometimes these waters also have a strong undercurrent that people are unaware of. And the obvious problem is, driving through that water can stall out the car and leave you stranded.”
That, Hill said, in addition to creating a dangerous situation for motorists, takes officers away from other duties.
Avoiding the high waters is the safest option, Hill said.
The Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory urges residents to  keep themselves informed of potential weather threats by contacting the county emergency management agency at 574-371-2602 or the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory at 574-372-9502, and to pay attention to directions from local, state and federal public safety officials concerning flooding and other severe weather.
