Railroad Seeks To Inform Public About Safety

Posted

CSX Transportation said Tuesday they want to help inform the public about safety issues involving the upgraded double-track railroad that stretches across two-thirds of Kosciusko County.

Jay Kern, Operation Lifesaver presenter for CSX, said he was glad in a way the double track operation was delayed until July 13. He said he would have more time to inform the public on the proper safety precautions that would be needed.

Texas is the highest ranked state in rail crashes and Indiana is second, said Kern at the Kosciusko County Commissioners' meeting.

While there will be no increase in the number of trains until Sept. 1, the 35 trains per day that now move through the Syracuse and Milford area will use both tracks.

Even when the trains do begin to increase, Kern said, it "won't be an overnight thing, it will happen gradually."

Indiana Operation Lifesaver and CSX are urging all drivers to look, listen and live. There is always the possibility there will be a second train on the other track and they want to be sure drivers wait for a good view in both directions before crossing the tracks.
