Veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, other military veterans, family and friends attended a short ceremony at the Kosciusko County courthouse war memorial this morning to honor Purple Heart medal recipients.
During their regular Tuesday meeting, the commissioners signed a proclamation declaring the week of Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Week in Kosciusko County.
County Auditor Sue Ann Mitchell said Marine Don Guard contacted her with a request to recognize and appreciate the service of Purple Heart recipients last week.
She read the proclamation.
Guard, a retired first sergeant, who attended the commissioners meeting as well as the ceremony that followed, served in World War II, Korea and in Vietnam.
The Purple Heart began as a Badge of Distinction following the Revolutionary War. General George Washington had the medal created Aug. 7, 1782. He presented it to three soldiers for exemplary duty.
Veterans Service Director Mike Barnett said he has no idea how many local veterans have received Purple Hearts. He comes across the distinction listed on military records, but does not keep track of them.
During the ceremony, Emergency Management Director Ed Rock, of Mentone, sang "God Bless The USA."
County commissioners are Avis Gunter, Brad Jackson and Ron Truex.
