WINONA LAKE - The Purdue University Glee Club will appear Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Rodeheaver Auditorium.
Guests of the Lakeland Community Concert Association, the concert is open to season ticket holders. Individual tickets will be sold at the door for $15 each. Children, 18-years-old and younger, attend free when accompanied by an adult.
Founded in 1893, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club has been and continues to be one of Purdue University's traditions. The club's popularity has sent them across the nation, having performed on national television, at five presidential inaugurations and at many national and international concert events.
Today, under conductor Brian Breed, these ambassadors for Purdue University continue to entertain audiences throughout the world.
Ten European tours, as well as tours including China, Mexico and the former Soviet Union, have showcased the talents of these young men. The Purdue Varsity Glee Club has performed at Veterans Day celebrations sponsored by the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and the Veterans Day Council of Indianapolis. International radio audiences had the opportunity to hear the club as part of Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2001 and 2006.
A Glee Club performance features a broad range of musical selections. The audience-oriented repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, folk songs to show tunes.
One tradition of the group is for members to meet the audience following each performance.
Members compete to be a part of the Glee Club and each member is a potential soloist.
Other scheduled LCCA concerts include the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Christmas Pops Concert, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.; The Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band, March 24, at 7:30; and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis 2006 winner, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Season tickets are $35 and will be available at Saturday's concert. Ticket holders also may attend community concerts in Kendallville, LaPorte and Kokomo.
