Puppies & Politicians

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
Oh how politicians love to talk about cute ‘n’ cuddly puppies, especially when the alternative is to discuss unpleasant topics like his or her voting records. I love puppies just as much as the next guy, but one thing that does not mix well for me is the combination of puppies and politicians.
When I read Ms. Kubacki’s “I love puppies” letter to her constituents last week, I was very puzzled by her emotional outburst. I went back through the letters to the editor and the complaints her constituents have brought to the table over the past few weeks. Not one time did I find any complaint about Rebecca’s mothering skills, her pro-life record, or for that matter, her religion.
So, I kept digging.
What I did find however were very specific roll calls and complaints about core values where she is officially on record as casting a vote or taking a stand! What I read were letters from constituents who were frustrated that Rebecca campaigned one way, and then voted another. I found open frustration and feelings of betrayal toward a big government politician who wanted as a distraction to hand you some cute cuddly puppies instead of the facts. I am OK with Ms. Kubacki’s religion and family life being private, but her voting record is very public and it is the duty of every citizen in House District 22 to study her votes and express displeasure when they disagree, or satisfaction on a job well done. But in my opinion the disappointments have outweighed the satisfaction.
Her last statement summed it up for me well. Where have I heard the saying ... You have to pass the bill to know what is in it. Oh yes ... Nancy Pelosi!
Ms. Kubacki’s similar motto seems to be, you have to elect me again before I tell you how I’ll vote. Her constituents deserve better representation.
