Promotion, Retirement, Resignation Create Openings For 3 Principals

Three Warsaw schools have openings for three principals, according to the Warsaw School Board's discussion at the Monday meeting.

Dr. David McGuire, formerly Lakeview principal, was recently promoted to assistant superintendent, leaving a Lakeview vacancy. At Monday's meeting the board accepted the resignation of Silver Lake Elementary principal David McComb and the June 30, 2002, retirement of Warsaw Community High School principal Paul Crousore.

When board member Brad Brail asked if a principal for Silver Lake would be in place by the beginning of the school year, superintendent Dr. Lee Harman was noncommittal and said the administration would "do our best."

Silver Lake Elementary also was discussed when Cathy Lokotar, representing the Save Our Schools organization, asked for the board's permission for an architect from a South Bend firm to visit the school Wednesday. The architect would let SOS know how much he would charge them for an independent study of the building.

Lokotar said SOS is wary of basing all decisions on one study (done previously by The Odle McGuire & Shook Co., Indianapolis).

"So we would just feel more comfortable if we can hire this company and have them do a study on the building," she said.

James Folk, board member, said he wanted to ensure that SOS will take care of any costs incurred.

"We are prepared to do that, yes," Lokotar said.

She also said the group would make public the results of any study the architect does, but did not know when the study would be done, if the group does hire the architect.

The board approved the architect visiting the school Wednesday, and decided that to expedite the matter, Harman will have the authority to act on the board's behalf in future dealings with the architect.

Harman also said he will go through the Odle, McGuire & Shook study on Silver Lake, Atwood, Claypool and Jefferson elementaries, develop strategic options for the board to consider and come up with a schedule for public work sessions.

The board also approved textbook rental fees for the 2001-02 school year. The charges will be: kindergarten - $29; grade one - $91; grade two - $84; grade three - $83; grade four - $76; grade five - $73; and grade six, $77.

Book rental fees for grades seven through 12 vary according to the classes each student takes.

The board also:

• Heard a report by McGuire on summer school, which is done for WCHS students and will take place July 25 to Aug. 10 for elementary students. McGuire said 758 elementary students are enrolled, and approximately 70 percent are expected to attend. He also said approximately 500 high school students attended both sessions.

• Approved changes in board policies to reflect recent state requirements on policies dealing with student records, medication administration and possession of firearms.

• Approved giving Harman authority to cancel a personnel contract and to notify employees of personnel actions.

Board members are: Craig Allebach, Brad Brail, Larry Chamberlain, Cathy Folk, James Folk, Charles Sauders and Roy Szymanski.
