Prom Dresses, Accessories, Donations Sought

Posted
Though area high schools’ proms are a couple of months away, the Glass Slipper Collection is seeking donations now to help make sure every girl who wants to go to prom will be able to go.
Collection co-founder and Warsaw Community High School senior Katy Cobb, who also is co-organizing the Collection this year, said, “For the past four years we’ve collected prom dresses, shoes and things like jewelry to give to girls in the community who otherwise couldn’t afford to go to prom.”
The Collection helps any girl in need in a Kosciusko County high school so she can attend her prom this year.
Donations can be dropped off at Combined Community Services, 110 E. Prairie St., Warsaw, or WCHS now through April 13.
Businesses and individuals are needed to provide simple alterations as needed. Hairstylists are needed to provide free hairstyles. To offer these services, call 574-269-6019, Ext. 30, and leave a message with contact information.
Co-founder Alexis Light, a Grace College student and temporary CCS employee, said dress-choosing day is April 14 at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, 102 E. Market St., Warsaw. It is by invitation only, so people must sign up at their high school, on CCS’s website, by e-mailing alight@combinedcommunityservices.org or call Light at 574-269-6019, Ext. 30, as soon as possible.
The deadline to sign up is April 6.
Cobb said applications for the Glass Slipper Collection can be obtained at all high schools in Kosciusko County. A student needing assistance can send the application to the Collection and they will be signed up at that point. Light said the applications can be e-mailed or called in to the above information if a person does not want to do it face to face.
Light said the monetary goal this year is $400 so they can provide guys with tuxedos and meals for couples who need the assistance.
Another way to donate is through the KCCF’s website under the “Help Your Community” grants by typing in the link http://www.kcfoundation/org/helpyourcommunity/donate/details/cat/10/id/62 and searching for Glass Slipper.
In 2011, 87 girls received dresses, 12 boys were provided tuxedos and an additional 15 people got flowers, meals and/or hairstyles.
In past years, Light said, restaurants such as Applebee’s, Ruby Tuesday’s, Bennigan’s and The Boathouse helped out.
The only three high school students who will have access to the information of students who sign up are Cobb, Lacey Lisenbee and Ashlyn Vitoux. This is to ensure privacy so girls don’t feel awkward coming to choose a dress.
Lisenbee and Vitoux, sophomores at WCHS, will be organizers and co-sponsors of the Collection next year.
