Program Seeks To Avert Dangers Of Summer

One of the biggest concerns for keeping kids safe is traffic safety, said Lance Grubbs, president of Kosciusko County Safe Kids.

Safe Kids is an organization focused on increasing awareness of dangerous situations for kids and keeping them safe from accidental injury.

It is currently Safe Kids Week, and members are thinking about the summer and its possible dangers.Safe Kids' Kosciusko County chapter has two prime targets. Car seat inspections and supporting helmet use for bicycles are at the top of the list, Grubbs said.

"Ninety-one percent of people have their children situated improperly in car seats," he said. "It's not intentional, but there is usually some form of misuse."

Grubbs said the organization has come a long way in preventing accidental injury by having periodic car seat inspections.

Kosciusko's Safe Kids chapter also has two sites, the Heartline Pregnancy Center and the Winona Police Department, where technicians can check the use of children's car seats, and educate parents on how to use them properly.

The other top priority is making sure kids are wearing helmets when riding their bicycles, Grubbs said.

Safe Kids recently gave tips regarding the summer season because accidental injuries increase. Close supervision during swim and play, and safety gear such as life vests, are two big safety precautions. Common tips include teaching children how to cross the street, and restricting children from playing on balconies or roofs. Also, dressing children in bright clothing during low light or foggy conditions helps them be seen by drivers.

Safe Kids in Kosciusko consists of parents, health educators, law enforcement and others. There are about 25 members, but the organization is always looking for more to join, Grubbs said.

Safe Kids Week is until Friday.
