Program Could Save County Residents Money On Prescriptions

Posted
Drug discount cards soon may make prescription drug costs cheaper for Kosciusko County residents.

County auditor Sue Ann Mitchell said the program is available to county residents through the National Association of Counties and pharmaceutical services company, Caremark Rx Inc.Since Kosciusko County is a NACo member, all county residents qualify for the program which can save them an average of 20 percent on prescription drug purchases. Residents will show their discount cards to their pharmacists when buying prescription medicines which are not already covered by the resident's insurance or other discounts.

The cards are free and can be used at any participating pharmacy. There are no membership fees or enrollment costs for the program. There is no limit on how many times program participants may use their discount cards.

According to the NACo Web site, program discounts will vary depending on whether the purchased drugs are name brand or generic, and mail-in orders may net larger discounts. Participants may even get discounts on prescriptions for their pets.

Kosciusko County will join a growing number of counties nationwide participating in the discount program.

The Kosciusko County Commissioners gave Mitchell the go-ahead to register the county for the program June 12.

Mitchell said she plans to send registration information to Caremark by the end of this week. She said, after the county registers, it will be several weeks before the cards arrive and can be distributed. Mitchell said a list of pharmacies participating in the program has not yet been established.

Caremark is a Nashville, Tenn.-based company which operates a national retail pharmacy network of more than 60,000 pharmacies.
