For several years I've been using very expensive prescription eye drops (Xibrom) for a chronic eye condition. The full price for the eye drops is $200 for a tiny bottle that lasts a month. Since I have insurance I've been able to purchase the eye drops for $100.
My eye doctor suggested I check with my pharmacist to see if the medication might be available in a different tier at a lower price. I had never heard of the tier system, but after checking on the Internet I discovered many insurance companies have a list of compatible medications that are available in different tiers at different prices. The pharmacist checked with my insurance company and discovered a compatible medication at a lower price. I was hoping that I might be able to save a little money if a compatible medication were available in another tier, but I never dreamed I'd be able to save so much money.
I'm currently paying $5 a month instead of $100. It's definitely worthwhile to do some research into your insurance company tier system if you take prescription medication on a daily basis. You may be fortunate enough to switch to a less expensive medication in a different insurance tier.
