Prep Roundup: Squires Have "Moore" Down The Stretch

Posted

WABASH – “Let’s win this thing.”

Those were Manchester coach Greg Miller’s words to his team at halftime, before the Squires pulled off a spectacular, come-from-behind, 36-29 victory Friday at Wabash.

“I was really proud of our kids,” Miller said. “They took it on their own, and decided they were gonna win the game. We haven’t had that in a while, just to bounce back from adversity.”

The Squires were down 29-14 at halftime. That’s when Miller gave his players a reality check.

“I told our kids at halftime, ‘Everything, for the most part, Wabash got, we’ve given them through turnovers and blown assignments,’” Miller said. “(I said), ‘Let’s come out the second half and play our game and let’s take it to them.’”

Manchester’s comeback was kicked off by Delton Moore’s 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Moore had a gargantuan night, rushing 34 times for 344 yards and three touchdowns.

Later in the third, Devin Marcum connected with Trey Clark for a 54-yard touchdown pass, and Moore converted two points to tie the score at 29.

Late in the fourth, Marcum found Clark again, this time for a 16-yard touchdown. The Squires (2-1) held a 36-29 lead.

It wasn’t over yet.

With time left for just one play, Wabash (0-3) tried a lateral that turned into a touchdown. However, the play was called back because of an ineligible Wabash receiver downfield. The Apaches tried another lateral, but this time, the Squires stopped them to seal the win.

Manchester’s two first-half touchdowns came courtesy of Moore. He ran in the ball from six yards out in the first quarter, and pulled off a 37-yard touchdown run in the second.

Manchester next will play Friday at 7 p.m. at Peru.

Trojans Trounce Comets

FULTON – Triton bounced back in a big way Friday.

The Trojans rebounded from last week’s loss to LaVille with a 57-6 rout at Caston.

“We were able to work on some stuff tonight that’s gonna be very pivotal for us later on in the year,” said Triton coach Ron Brown.

Brown credited D’Angelo Shumpert with a big game, but said that the Trojans were able to get multiple players in the mix. That included younger players who don’t normally see the field.

“It’s extremely important for a program our size to get the younger kids experience,” Brown said.

Brown also was impressed with the improvement from last week’s game.

“Our kids were into the game,” he said. “They were focused into the second half of the game.”

Caston was unable to get much rest, with 15 players on its roster. Statistics were not available. Triton (2-1, 1-1 Hoosier North Conference) next will play a non-conference game at Bremen on Friday at 7 p.m.

Wildcats Drop To 0-3

BUNKER HILL – Whitko continued to struggle with a 33-0 loss Friday at Maconaquah.

The Wildcats (0-3) totaled 91 yards of offense, to the Braves’ 311.

Whitko allowed Maconaquah (2-1) a touchdown in the first quarter, and the Braves tacked on two more for the 20-0 halftime lead.

Maconaquah’s Colin Silvers scored two of his three touchdowns in the second half and finished with 75 yards on eight carries.

Cade Berg ran 15 times for 65 yards for Whitko. The Wildcats will host Rochester at 7 p.m. Friday in their Three Rivers Conference opener.
