Potpourri – Meet and Greet, GOP Bus Tour Part Of Election Activities

Posted
Two new election-related events have been announced.

Starting alphabetically, Democrats affiliated with the Wayne Township races have scheduled a meet-and-greet at Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce for Oct. 29. Start time is 7 p.m.

Township trustee candidate Shari Benyousky will be joined by township board candidates.

Benyousky said she invited Republicans – specifically her challenger, Jeanie Stackhouse – to join in the event. County GOP Chair Mike Ragan confirmed the invite was made, and that he told Benyousky that he didn’t see any need for it.

Jim Falkiner, one of the three Dem candidates running for the township board,  suggested that given the Republican lock on local government, he can see why they would not see the need.

“But the Benyousky campaign thinks some residents may differ and want to decide for themselves.”

Meanwhile, Ragan announced Thursday night that a statewide Republican bus tour is scheduled to stop in Warsaw on Nov. 4. Among those expected to participate are Gov. Eric Holcomb, Sentate candidate Mike Braun and a slate of statewide candidates. The bus is expected to park near GOP headquarters near the corner of Lake and Center streets. No time has been announced yet.

Slick Sales Pitch – Two firemen from Warsaw Wayne Fire Territory gave the Warsaw City Council a recap on their trip to the Carolinas as Hurricane Florence came ashore. Brent Fifer and Nate Iden joined other emergency responders from Northern Indiana to form a swift water rescue team.

It was a lengthy and interesting presentation that included plenty of photos and video that showed the extent of flooding. During their nine-day trip, the team made 169 rescues, including one involving a family that had 14 dogs. About 18 goats found inside that house were let loose while the dogs were rescued.

Oddly enough, the firemen concluded their recap with a pitch, suggesting the council consider purchasing a swift water rescue boat. No price tag was mentioned.

Mayor Joe Thallemer thanked the men for the presentation and efforts. “As for the commercial for the new boat, we’ll take that under consideration.”

Too Fired Up – State Sen. Randy Head introduced Rep. Jackie Walorski Thursday night, but admitted he jumped the gun earlier this week. Turns out, he thought the dinner at the Owl’s Nest north of North Webster was Monday. He and his wife drove up from Logansport, only to find an empty parking lot at the event center.

“How’s that for enthusiasm,” he told the audience.

Motivated – Syndicated radio DJ Bobby Bones, who can be heard on Fort Wayne’s US 93.3-FM, was the main speaker Friday at Chautauqua Wawasee’s workshop titled “You’re Not Alone; Battling Stigmas and Overcoming Obstacles.”

Bobby Bones currently appears on “Dancing with the Stars” and will be on the show Monday night.
