Have you noticed how your car and teeth quit shaking when leaving Kosciusko County? If you listen you can hear your car and dog in back seat let out a sigh of relief as pot holes and speed bumps turn into smoother, better maintained roads.
It's time for a Roughest Road in Kosciusko County Poll. Write in with your tales of the ugliest, bumpiest, most patched pavement you encounter in your daily travels. Does your road go from having 6 to 8 inch holes to patches raised 2 to 3 inches? Do find yourself drifting left of center in search of better pavement only to find it's just as rough traveling the other direction? Send in your vote.
I will start but I need to pick two that we drive on every day. First is Chapman Lake Drive. You can drive this road with your eyes shut because if you ever feel a smooth spot it means you are in someone's yard and need to make a correction. I can pull my boat down this road and it's dry in less than a mile. I guess it's like a dog shaking water off or something.
Second is North CR 300E. Now here comes the good part. This road starts at the county highway garage and goes north to Chapman Lake. I truly believe this road may be our county's testing grounds or maybe just dumping area for extra asphalt at the day's end. This stretch not only has holes and bumps, it also has deep grooves that guide you right to the next hazard area. You don't need to worry about your kids texting while driving because this road is too rough to hang on to their phone. Did I say it starts at the highway garage?
There seems to be fewer dead deer along this road. That's because the vehicles no longer can go fast enough to hurt them. The deer don't cross the road much anymore in fear of sprained ankles and damaged knees.
I guess if our county doesn't have the knowledge and or funds to fix the roads, at least we can have some fun sharing our stories. So cast your vote now and may a road near you be patched soon.
