NORTH WEBSTER - As Indiana National Guard troops prepare to serve overseas sometime after the holidays, people want to know what they can do to help.
Friday night at American Legion Post 253, North Webster, Staff Sgt. Dan Murphy and Staff Sgt. Arturo Garcia told the Legion members how they could assist the families of the deployed troops. Right now, monetary donations are a big help. Also, while the troops are deployed, if their families need assistance with such things as plumbing or snow plowing, help with that would be appreciated.
Garcia and Murphy will be staying behind to be the contact points between the family members and the men and women overseas. They will help the families get packages sent overseas to the soldiers from the Warsaw Armory. There is a limit as to what can be sent overseas, but can include items such as local newspapers and magazines.
"This is going to be the largest deployment for the state of Indiana, approximately 3,400," said Murphy.
Garcia said he and Murphy will be glad to take care of any questions they have.
Post 253 Commander Harry Kyler then presented the Guardsmen with a check for $166.25. The money was raised by Boy Scout Troop 726.
The Post allowed the Scouts to sell popcorn at their facility on Oct. 5. During the Show & Sell the Scouts had this year, they decided to give the donations they collected to go toward support for military personnel.
After the presentation, Kyler said the Post will have ongoing programs to help soldiers and their families out for whatever they may need.
