Pool Cue Thwarts Robbery Attempt

Posted
NORTH MANCHESTER - An Illinois man was arrested late Friday night in the attempted robbery of East End Lunch in North Manchester.

A pool cue might have kept the man from leaving with any money from the business.

At around 11 p.m., Wabash County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from a cell phone. The caller reported someone robbed East End Lunch, East Main Street, and that the person who held up the bar had left.

North Manchester Police Department officers responded and were told that a patron came around the bar, grabbed the bartender and placed a gun to her head asking for money.

Another employee came up on the suspect, later identified as Martin A. Garner, 47, of Mattoon, Ill., and hit him with a pool cue.

Garner then fled the bar before taking any money.

The two employees suffered minor injures from the incident but refused medical treatment.

Garner was later found at Greenbridge Trailer Court, 309 Cecil St., North Manchester.

Garner was booked into Wabash County Jail at 4:25 a.m. Saturday on attempted robbery resulting in injury, a Class B felony, and an Indiana parole warrant.

Because he was arrested on a parole violation, Garner is being held without bond.
