SYRACUSE - Local police officials were at the Ku Klux Klan rally in Syracuse today to ensure safety in the community.

The Klan staged a demonstration at noon in support of Lera Reinholt, the fourth-grade teacher who distributed a worksheet on the Klan in her classroom.

Local police were busy this morning preparing for the crowd of journalists and anti-Klan protestors that traditionally follow Klan events.

An assistant to Syracuse Town Marshal Bill Endler said the department planned to make sure everything is safe for both parties at the rally.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Al Rovenstine said this morning that he would be at the school along with several of his deputies to ensure a safe demonstration. Rovenstine said he had not heard directly from any Klansmen about their plans to rally.

Rovenstine said 12 to 24 Klansmen were expected at the school. The officers will be on hand as a precaution, authorities said.

A few plainclothes officers from Warsaw planned to be in town to help out if necessary, officials said. Warsaw Police Capt. Steve Foster said his department would be available if assistance was needed.
