Girl With Warsaw Ties Dies In Auto Accident In Benton County

BENTON COUNTY - A 5-year-old girl, whose father is formerly of Warsaw, died Thursday after being involved in an auto accident in Benton County.

According to a report from the Benton County Sheriff's Department, Saige Breanne Young, 5, Fowler, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her mother, Jessica Haynes, 22, Fowler.

According to the press release from Benton County, Haynes was westbound on U.S. 52, just west of CR 300E, when she failed to see a slower moving dump truck, driven by Mark Hinote, 50, Veedersburg.

Haynes' Chevy Blazer then struck Hinote's dump truck, causing the Blazer to roller over and catch fire.

Young was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Young's father, Evan J. Young, Lafayette, along with grandfather Jeffrey A. Young, are both formerly of Warsaw.

Young's great-grandparents, George and Waunita Young, still reside in Warsaw.

Young's obituary appears on page 3A of today's edition.

Dumpster Fires Remain Under Investigation By WPD

The Warsaw Fire Department responded to three more reports of dumpster fires recently.

The cause of those fires are still under investigation.

Saturday, crews were dispatched to Bartel Printing Co., 310 Cedar St., Warsaw, where a dumpster was found to be smoldering by neighbors.

Two more dumpster fires were reported Monday. The first was at 2 a.m. at Tayco Steel Co., 209 S. Lincoln St., Warsaw, and the other came at 4:12 p.m. at the boat launch area on East Smith Street.

WFD reminds business owners that Indiana Fire Code requires dumpsters to be more than five feet from the exterior of a commercial building.

A Warsaw Police Department officer was attacked by a juvenile runaway he tried to restrain Tuesday night.

According to a WPD report, a Riverwood Ranch Home employee reported a 14-year-old female as a runaway. The girl was reported to be in the parking lot of Lowe's, hiding near some sheds.

WPD Patrolman Brian Martin tried to restrain the girl when she allegedly became incorrigible and started kicking Martin in the legs.

She eventually was restrained and taken into custody.

Two Fort Wayne Residents Arrested In Gift Card Scheme

Two people from Fort Wayne were arrested Sunday for theft at Kmart.

According to a report at the Warsaw Police Department, Eric Young, 33, and Mary Kathleen Johnson, both of Fort Wayne, were arrested after they allegedly took an item from the store, took it to the service center, and returned the item as if they'd bought it.

The couple were issued a $140 gift card. An employee of Kmart called police and Young and Johnson were arrested along U.S. 30.

Gift cards from other stores were found in the car.

Young and Johnson were booked into Kosciusko County Jail. Both of their bonds were set at $2,000.
