Police Chase Ends With Crash With InjuriesOne person was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital after a police chase ended in a crash.

Warsaw Police Department had a patrol officer observe unsafe and reckless operation of a motorcycle on Detroit Street Tuesday afternoon, according to WPD Public Information Officer Det./Sgt. Brad Kellar. The officer attempted to identify a registration plate. By the time he turned his vehicle around, the motorcyclist was already speeding away to allegedly evade law enforcement.

The pursuit went southbound on Detroit Street to Prairie Street, then west until the motorcycle collided with a northbound Toyota Prius at Union Street. While fleeing police, the adult male motorcyclist had disregarded a stop sign westbound on Prairie Street at Union Street and hit the Prius.

The suspect was wearing a helmet but “evidence suggests it was not being worn properly at the time of impact,” Kellar said. The motorcyclist suffered head, back and leg injuries in the collision.

The suspect was conscious and alert while being attended to by medics and fire personnel. A landing zone was set up at Warsaw Community High School and the motorcyclist was flown to Fort Wayne for further examination. Last known, he was in stable condition, Kellar said.

The three subjects in the Prius (two adults and juvenile) complained of minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene. Damage to the victim's vehicle was significant and the motorcycle appears to be totaled.

The criminal investigation is ongoing but officers preliminary plan to charge the subject for fleeing/resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony.
