Warsaw Community High School announced the winners of the 2014 Poetry Out Loud competition. The WCHS English Department reported freshman Megan Lowman, senior Grace Robison and freshman Courtney Thompson are the winners of the contest. In this competition, students selected a poem from the Poetry Out Loud database to memorize and recite during their English classes. Classroom winners then continued on to the schoolwide competition Jan. 29. A judging panel composed of high school staff and community members rated the students’ performances in terms of voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding and other criteria established by The National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation. Thompson placed third with her recitation of ‘Caged Bird’ by Maya Angelou and Robison placed second with the poem ‘Sheet Music’ by Brigit Pegeen Kelly. Lowman placed first with her rendition of ‘Meditation on a Grapefruit’ by Craig Arnold and will advance to the state competition Feb. 22 in Indianapolis.
