The gulf that separates Warsaw's boys track and field team from the rest of the Northern Lakes Conference swallowed yet another team Thursday.
Warsaw scored a season-high 111 points in routing Plymouth 111-21.
"I'll be honest, we have a pretty good team, and we got beat by 100 points," Plymouth coach John Barron said. "Now our kids are gonna get on the bus and hang their heads over this loss. But I knew we would get beat pretty bad. Warsaw is outstanding."
Plymouth lost by 90, not 100, but you get his point. This is the size of the gap that separates Warsaw from the rest of the NLC: Warsaw coach Troy Akers considers Plymouth the second-best team in the NLC.
Plymouth entered 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the NLC, but the Pilgrims were no match for Warsaw.
Plymouth won its NLC opener 99-33 over Goshen and placed second in an invitational last week, but the Pilgrims were no match for Warsaw.
Warsaw improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NLC. The Tigers are on pace for their fourth straight NLC title.
"We probably beat the second-best team in the conference this year," Akers said. "The conference is down, and we're up. There are a lot of young teams in the conference. We have good senior leadership and a good junior class. We have a nice blend."
Warsaw placed first in every event, and outside of the three relays, took two of the top three places in every event.
Grady Randall (41.15 seconds), Ryan Hill (41.53 seconds) and Cory Hill (43.46 seconds) swept the top three places in the 300 hurdles. Adam Sisson (23.12 seconds), Billy Sale (24.03 seconds) and Chris Clay (24.28 seconds) swept the top three places in the 200 dash.
"The hurdles have been events that weren't always the strongest for us," Akers said, "but Grady, Ryan Hill and Cory Hill have done a nice job for us."
Brad Seiss led Warsaw with four first places. Seiss won the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), 400 (51.97 seconds), 100 (11.12 seconds) and was a member of the first-place 400 relay team along with Ryan Hill, Randall and Sisson.
Akers said his lineup allowed Seiss to be successful.
"We moved kids around in events they don't necessarily run," Akers said. "We felt this was a good night to do that. Tonight it was Brad with the three first places, but it could have been Grady or Adam or someone else if we had put them there instead."
Warsaw shuffles its lineup and still wins by 90. Warsaw's Jon Dock ran the mile in 4:28 Saturday, but Akers didn't enter him in the event last night.
No matter. Jake Sweatland's time of 4:50.77 was good enough for first.
"It goes through cycles," Akers said. "We have just happened to be in an up cycle for four years. We're fortunate to have something pretty special. This could be the best team, but I wouldn't say it yet."
