BOURBON – Plymouth got off to a hot start Tuesday night in the Trojan Trench, bolting to a 13-3 lead over Triton. The Trojans answered with a 9-2 run into the second quarter to close within 15-13. From there, the host Trojans got no closer, but stayed within two possessions most of the game in Plymouth’s 40-36 high school boys basketball win. The Pilgrims’ Cam Eveland hit a trio of threes to help stake Plymouth to its early lead. The visitors took advantage of an early exit by senior Masen Yeo, who picked up a pair of fouls in the first 45 seconds of the game. “(Yeo) does a lot for us. In the Washington Township game he had 29 of our points (in a 62-50 Triton win Nov. 27). He’s our athlete on the court and he can do a lot of things, he’s very versatile. He can go inside or outside, and without him on the court, it definitely takes away from our athleticism on both sides of the court,” Triton head coach Jason Groves said. “I think it took him out of rhythm a little bit. He just never seemed to get in the flow tonight. But we’ve got to be able to play through that and have other guys step up.” Yeo re-entered the game late in the first quarter, and his trey closed the gap to five points by the end of the frame. The visiting Pilgrims rebuilt a six-point lead, but senior Jordan Anderson buried a long three-pointer from the left side at the buzzer to pull Triton within three. Anderson finished with a team-high 13 points. “(Anderson is) a senior leader for us, and that’s what we expect out of him. He’s been a starter since his sophomore year, and that’s what we expect out of our seniors,” Groves said. “There’s nothing new there. He did it in the first game of the year, he played well in the second game of the year and no different here. You gotta have guys with experience come through when you need it, and he did tonight.” After halftime, both teams exchanged defensive stops with the occasional score mixed in. Just as Triton had a chance to win, Plymouth had opportunities to put the game away but Triton stayed around, looking for its eighth win in a series that dates back to the mid 1960s. “I talked to them about our resiliency; it was nice our kids kept fighting their way back and put themselves in a position to win,” Groves said. “You can never be satisfied with a loss, but at the same time it shows these kids have confidence in themselves, confidence in each other and they’re never out of a basketball game. ”We weren’t shooting particlarily well tonight, we had some open looks, we just didn’t knock them down. Defensively, we played well enough to win. If you’d have told me before the game we were going to hold them to 40 points, I’d have taken that. At the same time, we can get better and we have a lot of things to work on.” Eveland finished with a game-high 14 points for Plymouth (3-0), and Josh Anders finished with 10. Yeo and Grant Johnson scored six points each for Triton. The Trojans, now 2-1, host No. 3 (Class 3A) NorthWood Friday night.
