Playground Fences

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to start off by saying the school corporation did a great job with the new Madison and Leesburg Elementary school buildings. I was very impressed and honored that my children have the opportunity to attend a new school building.

However, one major aspect is lacking and it is an important one to me and should be to other parents as well – complete fencing around both playgrounds. Now Madison sits on the corner of what is now two busy roads due to the new Ivy Tech facility and Sophomore Danek along with another business on N 150 W. The school has two playgrounds, one on either side of the building. Both of the playgrounds also exit to the front and rear parking lots with no barriers. To make this already unsafe matter worse, classes are often combined on the playground and are supervised by only two adults. That is too many children per adult in my opinion. Leesburg Elementary is similar in the fact that the playgrounds do not have complete fencing.

It only takes one child to slip past and get into the parking lot or the busy roads. Is that what it is going to take to get the fences installed? Can we not find the funding to get this important job completed? I have attempted to contact Dr. Greg Hintz about this matter and was unsuccessful. Hopefully this will get someone’s attention.
