'Play It Safe' Day Set Sept. 11Play It Safe Family Safety Day is Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Center Lake Pavilion at Central Park.

A nationally known electric safety expert will present his electric safety shows at the third annual Play It Safe Family Safety Day.

The event is co-sponsored by Kosciusko REMC and the Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory.

Kyle Finley will present his "Live Line Demo" program at the event Sept. 11 at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Finley travels the U.S. with his live line rig, showing how electricity flows through power lines and demonstrates the power and the accompanying dangers of coming into contact with live lines.

This year's Play It Safe Family Safety Day will continue to offer more activities devoted to health and safety.

"We're really excited about the new activities and participants on board for this year, thanks to some generous grants from community foundations," said Shirley Fetrow, event coordinator for the Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory.

In addition to Finley's appearance, the South Bend Memorial Hospital "Heartworks Hummer" will be on hand with kids' health activities.

Kids will make their own first aid kits, courtesy of grants from Kosciusko Community Foundation and K21 Foundation.

The lineup of activities include a Lutheran Hospital air helicopter that arrives in Central Park at 11 a.m., and electric live line demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Parkview Samaritan helicopter will arrive in Central Park at 1 p.m. and a 9/11 Memorial tribute to Officer Jeff Shaw will begin at 3:15 p.m.

The 9/11 Memorial committee will hold a ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial Sept. 11 at 3:15 p.m. at Center Lake Pavilion. Shaw's name will be placed on the memorial.

Shaw, a former Kosciusko County Sherrif's Department officer, was killed in the line of duty in 2009.

Free activities being planned include Safe Assured kids' identification kits provided by Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club, free dental screenings, an animal safety display and a Power Town mini live line demonstration.

There will be emergency vehicles on display with fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, helicopters, a KREMC bucket truck, a bicycle rodeo by Warsaw Police Department, Warsaw/Wayne Township zip rides for kids, water rescue demonstrations and boat rides.
