Plaque Marks Old Jail Museum's Time Capsule

Posted

In 1989 a time capsule was created for the Old Jail Museum, Warsaw, to be opened in 2039.

In the capsule are scrolls and copies of the Constitution of the United States from a re-enactment staged at the museum in September 1989.

Four hundred people attended the event and each signed with a quill pen an "Affirmation of the Constitution."

The capsule also contains an article on how the small elevator is being installed with pictures of the work in progress.

According to an article written by Chick Lamoree, published in the Times-Union April 18, 1989, the capsule was "placed in the wall of the lift shaft."

"We've spent years looking inside the shaft," said Old Jail Museum director Jeannie Jones of a futile search for the capsule.

Bill Anderson, former supervisor of the lift construction crew, was consulted recently and he said the capsule was actually embedded in the wall outside the elevator and a mystery was solved.

As intended year ago, a brass plaque marking the capsule's location has been installed.
