With the town of Syracuse supporting it, the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Wednesday approved Marsh Supermarket's petition to rezone ground from an industrial II to a commercial district.
The property is on the south side of Pickwick Drive and east of Sycamore Street in Turkey Creek Township.
The Syracuse Town Council will hear the rezoning request at its July 15 meeting at 7 p.m. in the town hall. On rezonings inside the town limits of Syracuse, the county plan commission is only a recommending body to the town council.
Attorney Steve Snyder, on behalf of Marsh, said the original plan for that property, along with property currently occupied by the Wawasee Motel and an old laundromat, was to build a Village Pantry, another retail business, a car wash and gasoline sales. However, Marsh officials changed their minds and now want to put in an Arthur's Fresh Market, which specializes in fresh produce. He said Marsh is uncertain whether or not they will have gasoline sales.
The grocery store will be approximately 20,000 square feet.
Snyder said the site is flat, level land accessible to Ind. 13. A red light at the intersection of Ind. 13 and Pickwick Road will help with traffic control, he said.
"It is compatible with everything around it," Snyder said of the store.
A letter from the town of Syracuse recommending that the plan commission approve the rezoning "might give you a hint" on what to decide, Snyder said, since the town council also will have final approval of the rezoning.
