Plan Commission OKs Home Business Rezoning

Posted

Due to the growth of his business, Cornelius Newsome's cleaning services home occupation business now has more than 30 employees.

However, with a home occupation business, that number exceeds the amount of employees allowed by county ordinance.

Newsome petitioned the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Wednesday to rezone his 7.48 acres from an agricultural district to a commercial district so his business would meet all the county ordinances. The property is on the west side of Ind. 15 and 1,120 feet north of Levi Lee Road in Plain Township.

Newsome told the plan commission that only he and his wife and secretary actually work at the house. The secretary is a member of his family. Other employees check in to work at the job site.

"My business has grown," said Newsome, "and to be in compliance with what the plan commission wants us to do," we need to rezone.

The plan commission unanimously approved to recommend the rezoning to the Kosciusko County Commissioners. The commissioners will hear the petition July 31 at 10 a.m. in the county courthouse.

By a vote of 8 to 1, the plan commission also approved Robert and Brenda Smits' petition to rezone ground from an agricultural district to an Ag II district. The property is on the west side of CR 850E and 1,100 feet north of Epworth Forest Road in Tippecanoe Township.

The Smits' petition will be heard by the commissioners July 31 at 10 a.m.

In other business, the plan commission:

• Approved Kevin Dwyer's petition for a final plat for a residential development on a 1.13-acre tract of ground. The property is on CR 60W, 380 feet north of CR 1250N in Van Buren Township.

• Approved Fahl Manufactured Homes' petition for a preliminary plat for a residential development on 7.477 acres. The property is on the east side of CR 100E in Plain Township.

• Continued Bruce Cavell's petition for a preliminary plat for a residential development. The property is on the south side of CR 500N and 620 feet east of Ind. 13 in Tippecanoe Township.

• Continued Sycamore Fields LLC's petition for a preliminary plat for an Ag II development on 26.214 acres. The property is on the corner of CR 450S and Sullivan Road (CR 650E) in Tippecanoe Township.

Members of the plan commission include Vic Virgil, Kelly Easterday, Don Ahrms, Dick Kemper, Kevin McSherry, Norm Lovell, Charlie Haffner, Hal Strong and Barb Carwile. They meet at 1 p.m. in the county courthouse on the first Wednesday of every month.
