NORTH WEBSTER - An Atwood man died on his birthday Wednesday after the ultralight aircraft he was piloting crashed.
Sam E. Cormany, 66, Atwood, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office of blunt force injuries suffered in the accident.
According to information from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday the office received a report of an ultralight aircraft accident at 9307 E. CR 250N, North Webster. Upon arrival, officers found the aircraft crashed into the yard at the residence.
Cormany reportedly landed in a field near the residence without incident earlier to visit his friends, Jerry and Connie Craig. The accident occured after Cormany took off from the field and - for unknown reasons - lost control of the aircraft and crashed into the yard a few hundred yards away.
The aircraft did not collide with any buildings.
KCSD was assisted at the scene by the North Webster police and fire departments, North Webster EMS and the county coroner's office.
The accident remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
